Same Day Surgery (SDS)

      As we move into the 21st century, we continue the vision of promoting healthier communities. As Americans live longer, the goal is to meet changing health care needs to provide a healthy, independent lifestyle.

     Each nurse in the Same Day Surgery Unit at Mercy Hospital provides open communication with patients and their families to enhance understanding of the surgical procedure and promote the healing process following surgery. Colorful brochures specific to the patient's surgery reinforce understanding of the process. The surgical unit includes private patient recovery rooms, four operating suites, post-anesthesia recovery service, and preparation teaching from registered nurses specific to the procedure before and after surgery.

     For the patient who prefers staying close to home rather than traveling a distance, it is important to understand the availability of services offered:

• Ophthamology - eye surgery
• Ear, Nose & Throat - ear tubes, tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, nasal surgery
• Obstetrics/Gynecology - C-section, hysterectomy, bladder repair
• General Surgery - breast, laparoscopic, hernia, emergency, appendectomy
• Urology - urine system
• Podiatry - foot correction surgery, hammer toe, bunion, toenail
• Endoscopy - colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy
